Farmers Begin Rail Roko Protest in Punjab, Supreme Court Sets Hearing on December 19

Farmers in Punjab started a three-hour ‘rail roko’ protest on Monday, disrupting train services across the state. The protest is being held in 23 districts, including major locations such as Moga and Faridkot. This agitation has been organized by Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. The farmers blocked railway tracks to raise their demands and announced that the protest will continue until 3 PM.

The farmers have been protesting for several months, demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops. The agitation reflects their frustration with the lack of action on these critical issues.

Supreme Court Takes Notice of Farmers’ Issues

The Supreme Court has stepped in and expressed its willingness to hear the concerns of the farmers. A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant welcomed the farmers to present their issues and assured that the Court will consider the viewpoints of all stakeholders involved.

The Punjab Government informed the Supreme Court about ongoing discussions with Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a key farmers’ leader who is on a fast-unto-death protest at the Khanauri border. The Punjab Government highlighted that continuous meetings have been held with him to resolve the matter.

The Supreme Court expressed deep concern over the health of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been fasting for over 20 days. The Court urged the Punjab Government to ensure he receives immediate medical help and necessary care.

Farmers Decline to Interact with Committee

While addressing the situation, the Supreme Court noted that the farmers have declined to engage with the high-powered committee formed earlier to resolve the issue. The Court reiterated the importance of dialogue and expressed hope that a solution can be reached soon.

The Supreme Court scheduled the next hearing for December 19, where all matters related to the farmers’ protest and demands will be further reviewed.

The protests and the Supreme Court’s intervention highlight the growing urgency to address the farmers’ concerns while balancing the interests of all involved parties. The rail roko protests, combined with the farmers’ long-standing agitation, indicate the seriousness of their demand for a legal guarantee on MSP.
