Antibiotics are a type of medicine used to treat bacterial infections. They work by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause infections in the body. Antibiotics can be used to treat a variety of infections, including respiratory infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis, skin infections such as cellulitis and impetigo, urinary tract infections, and sexually transmitted infections.
There are several types of antibiotics, including penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines, and fluoroquinolones. Each type of antibiotic works in a different way to fight bacterial infections.
The IMA said “; It is important to avoid antibiotics during cold and cough because most of these illnesses are caused by viruses, not bacteria. Antibiotics only work against bacterial infections, not viral infections. Taking antibiotics unnecessarily can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance, which is a growing global public health concern.
Additionally, colds and coughs are usually self-limiting, meaning they will get better on their own without the need for antibiotics. Antibiotics will not help alleviate symptoms or shorten the duration of a viral infection.
If a person has a bacterial infection that is complicating their cold or cough, such as a bacterial sinus infection, pneumonia, or strep throat, then antibiotics may be appropriate. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the cause of the illness and whether antibiotics are necessary.”
