Shakib Al Hasan Suspended from Bowling After Failing Action Test

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in international and domestic cricket. The decision came after he failed an independent assessment of his bowling action earlier this month at Loughborough University, an ICC-accredited centre in the UK.

Reason for Suspension

Shakib was reported for a suspect bowling action during an English county cricket match in September. Following this, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) took action. According to ICC rules, when a player is suspended in domestic competitions, the ban automatically applies to international cricket and other domestic competitions worldwide.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed the suspension in an official statement. It said:

Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the ECB. He is also banned from bowling in domestic cricket outside Bangladesh and in international cricket.

What Happens Next?

Shakib can still play as a batter in domestic and international matches. However, he cannot bowl until his action is cleared in a reassessment test. If the new assessment finds his bowling action legal, Shakib will be allowed to resume bowling.

A Troubled Year for Shakib

This suspension adds to an already difficult year for Shakib. His cricket career has been uncertain due to his political role as a Member of Parliament. Protests in Bangladesh earlier this year led to the fall of the Awami League government, of which Shakib was a part. These protests resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including many university students.

Shakib has not played Test cricket for Bangladesh in recent times. His wish for a farewell Test match in Dhaka was denied due to ongoing student protests. He is also retired from T20 cricket but remains active in ODIs. However, he was not included in Bangladesh’s recent ODI series against Afghanistan and West Indies.

Current Playing Status

At present, Shakib is playing in the Lanka T10 tournament. Notably, he did not bowl in his last two matches for Galle Marvels, including one played on Sunday evening.

Shakib’s future as a bowler now depends on the results of the reassessment test. Until then, he will have to focus on his role as a batter for both domestic and international competitions.
