A Heartbreaking Loss
The football world was left in shock on Friday as West Ham United announced the death of Oscar Fairs, their 15-year-old academy goalkeeper. Oscar passed away after a valiant fight against cancer, leaving his family, teammates, and fans devastated.
Who Was Oscar Fairs?
Oscar Fairs, from Benfleet, Essex, was a promising goalkeeper in the West Ham United Academy. Known for his talent on the field and his bright personality, Oscar was beloved by everyone at the club. Sporting director Mark Noble described him as a “true Hammer” and a fantastic young man who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A Battle Against the Odds
In August 2023, Oscar was diagnosed with a rare 7cm ependymoma brain tumor. Despite undergoing seven surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, doctors informed his family that palliative care was the only option. Determined to explore every possibility, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise £100,000 for a treatment trial in France.
Footballers and fans rallied to support the cause, with West Ham players contributing £27,000, club chairman David Sullivan donating £10,000, and Arsenal star Declan Rice adding £5,000. Despite their collective efforts, Oscar’s condition worsened, and he tragically passed away at the age of 15.
It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United confirm the tragic passing of our U15s Academy goalkeeper Oscar Fairs, following his brave battle with cancer.
Rest in peace, brave Oscar.
