World Tuberculosis Day is celebrated every year on March 24th to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB), which is a serious infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is celebrated to highlight the efforts made to prevent and treat tuberculosis and to promote worldwide public awareness of its symptoms, prevention, and cure.
The day marks the anniversary of the announcement of Robert Koch’s discovery of the bacterium that causes TB in 1882. Koch’s discovery was a major breakthrough in the fight against the disease, and World Tuberculosis Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing global efforts to eliminate TB as a public health threat.
The theme for World Tuberculosis Day 2022 is “It’s Time to End TB: Accelerating Progress towards Elimination”. The aim is to accelerate progress towards the global goal of ending TB by 2030, as outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
