It was declared on June 25, 1975, and remained in effect until its official end on March 21, 1977. During this period, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, exercised extraordinary powers, suspending civil liberties and implementing authoritarian measures.

The Emergency was triggered by the Allahabad High Court’s verdict in 1975, which found Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice. Under the guise of maintaining stability and preventing chaos, she suspended fundamental rights and unleashed a wave of repression. One of the most controversial aspects of the Emergency was the government’s aggressive family planning program, which included forced sterilizations. Millions of men were subjected to sterilization procedures, often without their consent, in a misguided attempt to control population growth.
