New Delhi, December 24, 2024: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage-IV restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) following a significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality, aided by continuous rainfall over the past two days. The decision was made during a meeting of the GRAP Sub-Committee, which reviewed air quality data and meteorological forecasts.
Delhi’s air quality, which had worsened to “Severe+” levels with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 401 on December 16, triggered the enforcement of Stage-IV measures. However, steady rainfall since December 23 has contributed to the reduction of air pollutants, leading to a gradual improvement. On December 24, the AQI stood at 369 (“Very Poor”) by 4:00 PM and dropped further to 364 by 5:00 PM.
According to forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), favorable weather conditions, including rain and improved wind speeds, are expected to prevent a relapse into the “Severe” category (AQI above 400). The Sub-Committee noted that the rain had effectively washed away pollutants from the atmosphere, bringing much-needed relief to residents.
In light of these improvements, the CAQM revoked Stage-IV restrictions with immediate effect. These restrictions, imposed on December 16, included severe curbs on construction, industrial operations, and vehicular activities to combat the alarming pollution levels.
Despite lifting the Stage-IV measures, the Sub-Committee emphasized the continued implementation of Stages I, II, and III of GRAP. These measures include restrictions on certain activities to ensure that air quality does not deteriorate again.
The CAQM has urged citizens to remain cautious and comply with the ongoing pollution control measures. Authorities have highlighted the role of weather, particularly the recent rainfall, in improving air quality but stressed that proactive efforts are still crucial for long-term solutions.
This development marks a welcome respite for Delhi’s residents and businesses, who have endured weeks of severe pollution. The improved air quality highlights the combined impact of natural factors like rain and the strict enforcement of GRAP measures.
